Running

WHY TO RUN

Running burns so many calories. Burn .75 times your body weight per mile when you run. So a woman who weighs 140 pounds will burn 105 calories per mile. Head out for a nice 5-mile run and you have 525 calories knocked out in less than an hour. Work up to a 10K (6.2 miles), half-marathon (13.1 miles) or even a marathon (26.2 miles), and you can see where this is going.

You can lose serious inches. Running burns fat. Especially longer, slower runs. Running hills, sprints and longer distances will give you toned, defined, crazy strong legs. Plus, if you use the Chi-Running technique of leaning slightly forward from your ankles when you run while keeping your body in a straight line, you engage your abs and tighten them in the process.

Endorphins.
The runner’s high is true, so believe it. Endorphins are the brain’s naturally-occurring opiates that can make you feel peaceful, relaxed and even euphoric. It’s the greatest mood-altering drug there is.

It’s cheap therapy. Logging miles solo is so much better than parking yourself on your therapist’s couch. You are surrounded by nature with only your thoughts in tow. Problems suddenly seem smaller and creative juices will be flowing. All of that sweat dripping off your forehead is really ideas and solutions flowing from your brain!

You don’t need much. Running shoes, shorts, sports bra and tank top are pretty much all you need. Sure, you can get fancy by adding a GPS watch, heart-rate monitor, fuel belt and iPod, but simplicity can be a wonderfully freeing thing.

Races are full of hot, buff, disciplined guys. Nuff said.
